Microsoft and Nvidia unveil RTX Spark platform, Surface Laptop Ultra, and $5,999 Dev Box for local AI development
Microsoft and Nvidia announced the RTX Spark platform for local AI on Windows, the Surface Laptop Ultra with up to 128GB RAM, and the $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for developers. The Dev Box is available for preorder now, shipping in November.
Microsoft and Nvidia today announced the RTX Spark platform, a new Arm-based architecture aimed at bringing Nvidia’s GPU and AI acceleration to Windows laptops, alongside two new Surface devices. The flagship Surface Laptop Ultra, positioned as a MacBook Pro competitor, will ship with up to 128GB of unified memory and 18- or 20-core CPU variants from Nvidia. Separately, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box—a $5,999 mini PC for developers—is now available for preorder and scheduled to ship in November.
The announcements came during a joint event in San Francisco, where Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri held a “conversation on how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC,” according to The Verge’s Tom Warren. The event also covered Windows 11 performance and reliability improvements designed to support the new platform.
RTX Spark: Nvidia’s push into Arm laptops
The RTX Spark platform combines Nvidia’s Arm-based CPU cores with its Tensor cores and GPU expertise, targeting local AI workloads, creative applications, and gaming. Unlike the earlier Copilot Plus PC initiative, which focused on consumer AI features, RTX Spark is explicitly aimed at AI developers and creators. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang appeared on stage to detail how the platform fits into the broader Windows ecosystem, with multiple OEMs expected to launch RTX Spark-powered laptops alongside Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop Ultra.
Microsoft has not yet disclosed full pricing or release dates for the Surface Laptop Ultra, but rumors cited by The Verge point to configurations with 18-core and 20-core CPUs and RAM options up to 128GB. The device is designed to run local AI agents and models, leveraging Nvidia’s Tensor cores for inference and training tasks directly on the laptop.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: $5,999 for local AI development
The more concrete product announcement came with the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a flat, 3D-printed anodized aluminum mini PC that doubles as a heatsink, resembling the top vents of an Xbox Series X. Priced at $5,999, it is now available for preorder directly from Microsoft and is slated to ship in November. The Dev Box runs on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform with 128GB of unified memory and a 100-watt thermal envelope. According to Stevie Bonifield at The Verge, it is “optimized for running local AI, including models exceeding 120B parameters,” making it suitable for testing AI models, prototyping AI agents, or running AI coding tools on-device.
The Dev Box is part of Microsoft’s Project Zenith initiative, shipping with a developer-optimized Windows 11 Pro setup and preinstalled tools including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python, and Node. While the price is higher than Nvidia’s own DGX Spark mini PC from last year, Bonifield notes that PC component prices have been climbing due to RAM and other shortages.
Windows 11 improvements and positioning against Apple
Microsoft has been working on Windows 11 performance and reliability throughout the year, and the event highlighted fixes that prepare the OS to support RTX Spark hardware. The Verge’s live blog from the event noted that the company is positioning RTX Spark laptops—especially the Surface Laptop Ultra—as a direct competitor to Apple’s MacBook Pro, particularly for developers and creators who need local AI performance.
For engineers and technical readers, the key takeaway is that Nvidia is now offering a unified Arm-based platform with Tensor core acceleration, and Microsoft is building both a high-end laptop and a dedicated developer mini PC around it. The Dev Box, in particular, provides a known hardware target for local AI workloads, with a clear price and ship date. The Surface Laptop Ultra’s full specs and pricing remain unconfirmed, but the promise of up to 128GB of unified memory in a laptop form factor could shift expectations for on-device AI work.
Availability and next steps
- Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: preorder now at $5,999, ships November 2026.
- Surface Laptop Ultra: pricing and release date TBD; expected later this year with multiple configurations.
- RTX Spark platform: OEM laptops from other manufacturers expected in coming months.
Microsoft and Nvidia have not yet provided independent benchmark results for the RTX Spark platform. The claims about model size support (120B+ parameters) and performance comparisons to Apple’s MacBook Pro remain vendor claims until verified by third-party testing.
